Are eBooks Pushing Printed Books to the Brink of Extinction?

With the trend of publishing eBooks and the increasing number of people using e-readers like Kindle, could printed books be facing doom’s day? This is a big question and the answer would mainly depend on how the world’s population would respond to the emergence of eBooks. Although some would say that nothing could ever compare to the delight brought about by reading real (meaning tangible) books, we could never deny the fact that eBook sales are so high that they sell more copies than printed books especially in rich cultures like the United States and the United Kingdom.

This does not only apply to novels and books that you read before going to sleep at night. Even school and public libraries have also joined the trend of using the internet for research works. Gone are the days when students would browse through big book volumes just to be able to complete a report or prepare a given assignment in class. If there is any information that they need, the internet is considered as a much better source for updated information. Even encyclopedias have their own websites for easy access.

In today’s world where people rely too much on technology, there is no way to escape the reality that some old methods are starting to fade away. The same goes for the use of paper in book-making. Those that promote the use of eBooks convince people that they are doing their part in saving Mother Nature because lesser trees are being cut down to be made into paper. They may have a point on this matter but is this method really a good replacement for the printed book versions?

The fate of printed books lies in the hands of readers. For as long as people would continue to buy printed copies, publishing companies would still continue to print books to meet this demand. But then again, no one could really say what will happen to the book industry in the days to come. If modernization will lead people to rely too much on digital media, then perhaps printed books would come to the point of extinction one day.
