We have to admit that eBooks are somehow dominating the book industry to some extent. In fact, Amazon has just announced that of the 100 printed copies of books they sell, eBooks also top the number by selling 114 copies in the United Kingdom alone. Is there a reason for printing companies to be alarmed at this statistics? The difference may not be that significant but it still goes to show that printed books no longer have the same support they get like what they used to in the past years. And with Kindle and other e-readers going on an upsurge, would there ever come a time when printed books will become history? Probably not.
Despite the popularity of digital readers that aim to replace printed books, there still remain a good number of readers who prefer the REAL books. And to quote some folks, eBooks are not real books because they do not have the feel of paper and the satisfaction offered by flipping through the pages. And these are just some of the elements that digital versions could never emulate no matter how hard they try.
And just recently, Stephen King and Richard Russo announced that the next novels they are going to publish will not be available in electronic format. So this only goes to show that some writers still have this soft spot for the traditional method of reading. This is the kind of support that printed books need in order to live on.
Yes, the internet and digital technology now play a major role in the lives of people all over the world. But we also have to admit that the really good books deserve a place in our bookshelves. And real good books are things that are worthy to be treasured and cherished. Keeping a digital copy of your favorite novels is good for portability. You can keep as many titles as the memory could hold. But then again, you can always take pride in having a remarkable collection of printed books neatly arranged on your bookshelf.
Many people love to read. The medium in which the story is delivered is just a matter of choice for the reader. For as long as the reading population continue to purchase books in printed format, tangible books will continue to exist for sure.
